Understanding Vocabulary in Context VS2.20

If English is your second language, when you read, you may find many words you don’t understand. It is not good to look up every new word in the dictionary. If you look up every word, your reading is interrupted. You lose track of the ideas. Also, you do not remember the new words. When you read them again, you often just have to look them up again in the dictionary.

A better way to read is to guess what most of the new words mean. This is a natural way to learn language. You may not guess the exact meaning the first time you see a new word, but you can get a general meaning. When you see the word again in other situations (contexts), you can improve your understanding of the word. When you guess the meaning of the word, you think actively. This helps you to remember the word.

When you want to guess a word’s meaning, it helps if you know what part of speech it is. Is it a noun, a verb, an adjective or an adverb? You need to know the word’s function in the sentence. If you find that difficult, you should do the Learning Centre Handout VS6.10 Word Forms – Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs before you work on this handout.

100 Improvements to …

100 Improvements to …

This the 100 day journey of new yorker Randy Gregory with the porpouse of finding improvements to help new yorkers in their daily activities.

100. Love

100. Love
This is the view from my new apartment in Queens. I get to see the Chrysler building, and Empire from the street. And I Love it.

Love the fact that in New York, we get to ride from Coney Island to The Bronx for $2.50.
Love the fact that you can see a dozen various street performers, multiple pieces of art (even inside the trains!), and the most diverse culture in the U.S.
Love that you don’t have spend oodles of money on gas, oil, car insurance, and objects like windshield wipers.
Love the view you get of 5 Pointz when you enter Queens.
Love the view of the water when you go into Brooklyn.

Find your reasons to love the NYC Subway.

If you love something, you’ll treat it better. You’ll care more. Over 100 days, I have developed a deep love of this system, and I’ve discovered a diverse group of people who share my opinions. Starting soon, I’ll be devoting some time with an organization called the Station Alliance, who is dedicated to improving the quality of all of the stations in NYC. I’ll document what I’m doing with them here.

99. smile

99.Smile

A 2008 article published the British Journal of Medicine showed that smiling is actually contagious, and is a enabler of happiness. So next time you’re on the subway, smile. Don’t do it in a creepy way, mind you, but smile, and you’ll feel better about your day.

98. Be Kind with Employes

98. Be kind with employes.
Over the past 100 days, I’ve had a few times where I’ve noticed someone treating an employee horribly because they missed the train, or they’re the user at fault…listen, it’s not the employee’s fault. They are trying to do their job at the best level they can, to make sure that the system is running strong. Treat them like you would treat anyone else, with decency and respect.

92. Stay on the right

92. Stay on the right.

When walking up or down the stairs, or going through hallways, stay on the right. It helps promote a better flow of foot traffic, which means we all get to where we’re going faster.

91. Let people off
91. Let People Off
Stop rushing onto the train. Let others off before you board. By letting people off before you get on the train, you’re making their day easier.

75. No Food, No Drinks

75. No Food, No Drinks.
For the last thing I’ve learned from SFO (San Francisco, CA) is that their stations are impeccably clean. Minus the occasional human odor, there wasn’t anything offensive in the air. The entire time I was here, I noticed that there was no food or drinks allowed on the trains or the bus system, under threat of fines.

While it seems like a tough idea to impose on a city, if food & fluids were removed from the system, cleanliness would improve. Less garbage, less rats, no spilled coffee on our shoes.

Granted, this suggestion would require a shift in the mindset of the typical straphanger.

Now it´s your turn to become conscious about your city, share and improve this ideas if you agree with them.

HEINEMANN REGIONALS TAXFREE STORE

HEINEMANN REGIONALS TAXFREE STORE

“To move, to breath, to fly, to float- To gain all while you give. To roam the roads of lands remote: to travel is to live.” wrote Hans Christian Andersen in 1833, in The Fairy Tale of My Life. Now at the Copenhagen airport The BIG mermaid escorts all passengers as they travel the world. We also continued a tradition of contemporary Danish artist such as Elmgreen and Dragset or Bjørn Nørgård to continue to revisit the national heritage and identity nested in Andersens mermaid by treating her as a dynamic entity alive and available for reinterpretation rather than an untouchable dead monument.

Andersen injected the everyday with poetry and The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen is more than anything remarkable for how unremarkably she sits at the waters edge small and without a pedestal as if she is just a natural part of our daily life. Denmark is made up of almost 1000 islands from the North Sea to the Øresund. The BIG Mermaid at the CPH is conceived as an archipielago of Sacandinavian products amidst the flow of the people moving through Copenhagen Airport.

GREEN BUILDING

A NEW ERA OF GREEN BUILDING

The Dynamic Tower, the world’s first building in motion, takes the concept of green buildings to the next level were it will generate electricity for itself as well as other nearby buildings, making it the first skyscraper designed to be self powered.

The building generates electricity from wind turbines mounted horizontally between each floor, eighty story building will have up to seventy nine wind turbines, making it a true green power plant while traditional vertical wind turbines have some environmental negative impact, including obstruction of views and the need for roads to build and maintain them, the Dynamic Tower’s wind turbines are practically invisible and extremely quiet due to their special shape and the carbon fibre material they are made of.

Another environmentally green element of the Dynamic Tower is the photovoltaic cells that will be placed on the roof of each rotating floor to produce solar energy, approximately 20% of each roof will be exposed to the sun, so a building that has 80 roofs will equal the roofing space of 10 similar size buildings.

In addition, natural and recyclable materials including stone, marble, glass and wood will be used for the interior finishing.

To further improve the energy efficiency of the Dynamic Tower, insulated glass and structural insulating panels will be employed.

Energy will also be saved during construction, which involves pre-fabricating individual units in a factory, this Fisher Method not only reduces construction time, but it also results in a cleaner construction site with limited noise, dust, fumes and waste, the shorter building time also results in a less energy consumption than traditional construction methods.
